Before diving into this popular 2018 trend, let’s first answer the common question – What is a digital workspace? Emerging in the recent years, this concept allows tech professionals to access specific programs or tools that they may need from any device. Digital workspaces are being brought to life by various existing platforms, including Facebook, and are said to be shifting the workplace culture drastically. These developing technologies are enabling employees to work from anywhere while still using a secure network as they would in the office, therefore, incorporating less of a corporate structure, and reaching the current generation in a positive way. Here are a few changes that will be seen, transforming cubicle life, as we know it.

BYOD + BYOA
Bring Your Own Device
Many companies are adopting the “Bring Your Own Device” initiative, offering employees to use their personal devices, but still able to access organization specific information. Naturally, the biggest concern with this method was security, but, as companies began to implement BYOD, they found large cost savings on hardware, as well as an increase in employee engagement and efficiency. Often times, company computers are limited to software and devices also owned by the organization that do not support certain programs or software. By employees bringing their own devices, they are able to access these technologies that meet a distinctive need and are not limited by corporate IT.

Bring Your Own App
As a subcategory, organizations have also begun implementing the Bring Your Own App trend. This is allowing workers to use third-party cloud services, not owned by the company, to successfully complete projects – Popular examples of these are Dropbox and Google Drive, commonly used to share large files, as well as organize documents between multiple parties.

Employee Behavior
The implementation of digital workspaces will alter the way professionals operate on a day-to-day schedule, but will also, hopefully, demonstrate positive changes in the way employees’ complete projects. By allowing outside software, communication within teams will have the opportunity to strengthen by using various email systems and instant messaging (i.e. Google chat, Slack), enhancing the collaboration between members. With the expansion of video-conferencing applications and devices, we will see an increase in the amount of time that colleagues can meet outside of the office, therefore, offering flexibility within the day. Furthermore, the mobility that digital workspaces offer is vital in the eyes of young professionals. With organizations such as WeWork offering offsite work areas, teams are able to take their work elsewhere and meet in just about any environment.

Due to this ever-changing world of technology, Digital Workspaces are becoming more and more essential. The “place” versus “space” differentiation is key, as workplaces are where you go to work and workspaces are designed to be where you do the work. By offering these digital advantages, supervisors and senior management will quickly see the benefits outweighing the cons, as retention and productivity rates rise.
